Fake the glow this summer! Prettly’s favourite highlighters

We all want to look healthy and glowing, but let’s be honest - who actually gets enough sleep these days and when was the last time we saw the sun?! Enter - highlighting! The technique makeup artists have been using for years is now easier than ever to achieve with the wide range of products available. To make choosing one easier, we’ve tried and tested our favourites to bring you a shortlist. Just remember our top tips below for happy highlighting:

  • Liquid on liquid, powder on powder - to achieve the most natural look, keep to one texture to avoid any cakeyness. If you prefer a more dewy look, go with liquid, or for a matte finish use powder.
  • Blend is your friend! - Don’t forget to blend the highlighter in using either a brush, your fingers or a sponge.
  • Placement is key - to keep your highlighter looking natural and enhance your natural bone structure, it should be used where the light hits your face. The key areas are: top of cheekbones, cupid's bow, eyebrow arch and the bridge of your nose.

Cover FX - Custom Enhancer Drops £34

A couple of drops of these and your whole face is transformed! We can easily see why this is coined the ‘liquid gold’ of the makeup world. You only need a couple of drops for a dramatic difference, but warning: you’ll never go back to your old highlighter once you give these a go. Try mixing it in with your foundation for a more subtle glow.

Benefit - Watt’s Up! £24

Benefit’s legendary high beam highlighter may have met its match. In a peachy-champagne shade, this is the better alternative for those with yellow undertones. With its cream-to-powder finish, this highlighter creates a soft glow that is easily blendable.

Laura Mercier - Face Illuminator £32

If you prefer a powder, then look no further than Laura Mercier’s face illuminator, available in 4 different shades. With their non-dusting texture these highlighters create a smooth, buildable application that leave you with an instant healthy glow. We particularly love them because they don’t use glitter particles - no one wants to look like a disco ball!

Mac - Strobe Cream £25

The original strobing product, this cream contains pigments to help visibly brighten dull skin. With a pearl like finish, this is our favourite product for creating a noticeable glow on a night out. Use the tiniest amount on top of your foundation in key areas to leave you looking luminous all night long!

Happy highlighting!
